Marena García

Marena García

Born and raised in the Canary Islands, she spent years portraying rocks, geological strata, lava surfaces, and textures through photography — especially macro photography — exploring the interior of materials. In contact with visual languages, she studied graphic design in Barcelona and traveled to places of striking scenic character such as Iceland and Lanzarote. Intuitively and as a self-taught artist, she began experimenting with natural materials, creating organic pigments, which led to the development of her artistic project.

Marena García draws inspiration from the landscape of her childhood, from nature, and especially volcanic landscapes. She is fascinated by the arid, wild, and austere beauty of the terrain, which is directly reflected in her work. She draws influence from artists of the Canary Islands — from emblematic avant-garde figures such as César Manrique to significant artists of the 1950s Informalist movement like Manuel Millares, and experimental artists working with materials, such as Maribel Nazco.

Her work is deeply connected to the natural world, driven by an exploration of the diverse landscapes of the Earth and the connections we establish with our environment. She develops a close relationship with raw materials, primarily working with wild clays collected during nature-bonding sessions, earth, sand, and what was once wood expressed as ash and charcoal.

Through plastic art as a medium, she evokes a deep sense of connection and contemplation, seeking to establish relationships between traditional methods and contemporary artistic contexts. After intuitive, experimental exploration of materials, she sediments layers of matter onto stretchers to bring to life the geological forces that surround us. She works intuitively and impulsively on her knees on the floor, horizontally, using humble construction tools or her own hands.

Her work — textured landscapes — celebrates the tactile and visual richness of the Earth. She uses large wooden formats as a valid medium for introspection, prioritizing the connection between individual and environment through artistic contemplation.
